Three-Part Webinar for Pianist Magazine

I’ve been contributing articles to Pianist Magazine for over 10 years. During that time I’ve written an elementary ‘How-To-Play’ column—over 60 in total—for each issue and have composed an elementary piano piece—just over 15 so far—as part of the piano score section. I’ve also contributed regularly to Pianist’s blog, writing a series of ‘5-tips’ style posts.

It’s been a fascinating journey. Writing articles that focus on elementary piano music has provided an excellent opportunity to get to know a whole selection of lesser-known composers and their less complex repertoire, some of which I had previously known but much of which I had not.

During February and March 2024, I’ll be presenting a three-part webinar for the magazine. Moving online should be fun and provides a chance to offer my piano technique workshops to Pianist’s readers. I have presented these workshops on many occasions, but I generally do them ‘in person’, working with students or teachers around the piano. This time I will be behind a screen, but will hopefully still offer a similar experience; attendees are invited to sit at their instruments during each webinar, enabling participation in the exercises that we will work through. Everyone attending will be provided with the musical examples and exercises for all three webinars.

These webinars, which will be held on Zoom, focus on instigating flexible movement at the piano with the intention of avoiding injury, tension, and tightness; there will be much emphasis placed on developing a relaxed upper body alongside firmer fingers.
