Start Playing the Piano: Pianist Magazine

Pianist Magazine publishes several ‘extra issues’ per year and the latest one is out today. I’m writing a little about it as I recently proofread most of the articles: I’ve been proofreading for Pianist for the past couple of years.

Intended as a beginners’ handbook, this concise 84-page guide offers a bevy of useful articles for those who are considering learning the piano as a hobby, and it would also be beneficial for elementary to intermediate-level pianists too.

In the magazine, you can read Warwick Thompson’s excellent advice regarding how to find the perfect teacher – OK, so they don’t exist – but one who is right for you most certainly does. Michael McMillan surveys the wide variety of beginner’s piano methods written with the adult learner in mind, so that you can find one suitable for your needs. David Stevens guides you towards the best instrument for your property and your budget, and both Matthew Mills and I discuss piano exams; how to motivate yourself to enter for an exam and how to prepare meticulously for that exam, once you decide to go for it. There are detailed articles on scales and arpeggios as well as sight-reading, and one highlighting all the necessary considerations for those returning to piano playing after a break from it for many years.

Pianote extols the virtues of learning online, the London Contemporary School of Piano showcases the attractive courses they offer, Trinity College London presents their popular publications which are intended to guide and inspire players towards exam success, and pianist and teacher Marcel Zidani introduces his innovative method for adults and older children. And there are further articles spotlighting various piano brands and their current acoustic and digital instruments written by Kawai, Yamaha, and Gear4Music.

This extra magazine wouldn’t be ‘Pianist’ if it didn’t include a plethora of free scores! You can explore many pages of tempting music including works by J C Bach, Telemann, Clementi, Verdi, Bizet, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Grieg and Debussy, plus detailed lessons on three of those pieces written by me.

You know you want a copy, so visit Pianist’s website below to order now and you’ll be enjoying this intoxicating pursuit in no time.
